“The Clarinet”

At the beginning of the year, my friend Carleigh embarked on a cool letter writing project where she wrote a whopping 500 hand written letters in 100 days. Her recipients were to send something back along with her original letter. My response was to turn her great story-letter into a short comic strip.I did this in the wee hours of the morning in just over an hour.

I too played the clarinet and sax (but in high school) and loved the idea of someone just sitting there playing “air clarinet”. It’s something that we all did when we couldn’t make it through a tough phrase of music. I must confess that the kid came out looking more like me. (I had to guess at what Carleigh looked like and found out later she was a tall girl.)
Hope all of your Wednesdays are going well.

Oh Jana, I just loved this, as any musician would. Either we are that clarinet player – - or we know who she is!

[...] write. If you have a story or two, send them my way and maybe they’ll appear here this fall, like this one did. (Can’t 100% promise it will appear, or that I’ll draw you or characters in your story [...]

omg!!! This is wonderful!
I’m a friend of Carleigh’s and I found this through her fb post. I can’t believe this only took an hour, it’s so good! I was in band too (flute, then trumpet) but in high school, and also with the Mr Fryer she mentions. I’ve been known to airplay some of the harder passages too. Especially when we got roped into doing the Santa Claus parade (it’s hard to march and play). I still kind of miss playing though, as I haven’t touched either instrument since I graduated.

Thanks! I think once you’re in band, you’re always in band.
