Warp Speed Wednesday

So this day was going to be dedicated to a meandering through the creation of new work (primarily paintings) but I’ve been offered a show at the Gumboot for July which changes things a bit.
I need about seven-plus paintings to show.

I have..um…lets just say, less than seven-plus paintings ready.

So instead, the next month of Wednesdays will be a documentation of some of the fastest painting I’ve done since probably my school days. I’m going to throw in a bit of a commentary about my process, because I’m always curious how others do it.

So here is a sneak peak of my first week of painting seven-plus paintings simultaneously.
Wish me luck for the remaining 3 weeks.

Here’s my living room wall with the red-primed canvases. The bright red is a technique that latched on from my school days. Even if your paint coverage is uneven (ie sloppy), the red peaking through radiates a warmth instead of seeming unfinished. 99% of the paintings seen on my website have this undercoat. I’ve tried other colours, but the red just works for me.

All of the sketch, layout and colour decisions have already been made (which is why I’m not panicking too much). I actually paint the entire painting using Photoshop before even pulling out a brush. (You can see an example of my digital painting here.) Leaving the house to go to a studio for 8 hours or leaving the paints lying around just weren’t an option anymore after my son was born.
(And yes, it’s tempting to just print the digital file, but I like the effect of paint too much.)

I then grid out the work and paint the outlines in  brown acrylic.

Then I add a thin glaze of ‘shadows’ and ‘cools’ to the skin in oil. While that dries, I’m working on individual backgrounds.

Stay tuned!
